"Come Unto Me" - Day 19

Come Unto Me – Day 19

Welcome to “Come Unto Me” as we journey together through the gospel of Luke. Let us pray: Gracious God we thank you for the Living Word that gives witness to the life, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ. May your Holy Spirit open our souls to this Living Word. Amen

Tuesday, August 17 / Luke Chapter 19

Zacchaeus was a wee little man And a wee little man was he He climbed up in a sycamore tree For the Lord he wanted to see And when the Savior passed that way He looked up in the tree And said, 'Zacchaeus, you come down! For I'm going to your house today! For I'm going to your house today!

Do you recall singing that song in Sunday School along with the actions? This was one of my favorite songs because of the actions that allowed me to move around! The account of Zacchaeus is really our story. Each of us at different times have been searching for direction in our lives. What am I to make of all that is going on around me with this COVID-19? Does this one by the name of Jesus Christ have insight into life with all its challenges and disappointments? I have no doubt Zacchaeus had heard stories about Jesus and how he seemed to care for people from all walks of life. But would Jesus care about someone like Zacchaeus?

When the crowd saw Zacchaeus, they saw a tax collector. When Jesus saw Zacchaeus, he saw something more! Jesus saw a child of God! Jesus showed mercy to those that some saw as undeserving – unworthy. This is the Good News for you and me from the account of Jesus’ encounter with Zacchaeus. Jesus didn’t walk by and ignore him. Jesus had time for a man who was wondering, “Is their room in your following for one such as me?” The answer is clear when Jesus said, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” (Luke 19:5)

Let us pray: Merciful God, gracious and benevolent, through your Son you invite all the world to a meal of mercy. Grant that we may eagerly follow his call, and bring us with all your saints into your life of justice and joy, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen (ELW Prayers Time after Pentecost-Lectionary 31 / C)
